Vusi Mahlasela – Africa’s Voice of Freedom

“These songs were made to clothe people’s souls, to give hope and fight despair. They are about survival.”
-Vusi Mahlasela

The Artist:

For Vusi Mahlasela, life was far from easy while growing up – even attending Sunday church would cause him to be harassed for his beliefs or the color of his skin. His struggles with racism and the fresh memory of apartheid have had a lasting impact on his life that eventually inspired him to write songs like “When You Come Back” and “Sometimes You Just Can’t Make It On Your Own.” Known widely as “The Voice,” Vusi’s vocal range was impressive early on in his life and has added to the overwhelming enthusiasm he puts into his music. Not only does Vusi provide a toe-tapping beat, but his lyrics prove he is indeed involved in making a change as a poet. As a distinguished member of the Congress of South African writers, you will not find lyrics or songs with a lack of meaning on any of his albums.

By just being who he is and using honest lyrics he found himself nominated for an Oscar for his songs featured on the Mandela soundtrack in 1996. Vusi recently participated in the multi-media project “Playing for Change,” which brings unique musicians together from around the world. Vusi has also received nominations for Best South African Artist and Best Music Video back in 1996. In 1998, Vusi was finally rewarded for his determination and sincerity and received an award for Best Male Vocalist and Best Album. Vusi values music as a vessel to reach out to the people of the world, and though he first grabs our attention through his magnificent voice, what really draws us in is his integrity and desire to bring about positive change.
