Talib Kweli
Talib Kweli – True To His Roots
|
“The beautiful thing about Hip Hop is it’s like an audio collage. You can take any form of music and do it in a Hip Hop way and it’ll be a Hip Hop song. That’s the only music you can do that with.”
-Talib Kweli
The Artist: Talib Kweli has been in the game of Hip Hop for over fifteen years, making a name for himself through his sharp lyricism and outspoken views on social issues and politics. Over the course of his long career, Kweli has worked with icons such as DJ Quik, Kanye West, Common, and his fellow Blackstar member – Mos Def. Hip hop culture has changed dramatically since Kweli first started rapping, but he has held steadfast in making music about the significance of African culture and creating positive change through social activism. In 2005, Kweli left the major label he was signed to and started Blacksmith Records, a move that has allowed him to take complete control over the process of producing his music and to communicate more directly with his fans. Gutter Rainbows, his first solo album since 2007, was released in January 2011. In addition to his musical contribution to today’s important issues in youth and urban culture, Talib Kweli has also turned his words into actions. He is currently the spokesman of the P’Tones Records organization, a non-profit group that brings after school music programs to urban youth. Kweli also appears alongside several other prolific, inspirational artists on the upcoming benefit soundtrack to the Hip Hop dance film Beat the World. This soundtrack, produced by EarthTones founder and co-writer Frank Fitzpatrick, features collaborations between numerous internationally acclaimed artists who, like Talib, have consistently proven their devotion to creating positive social change throughout the world. The Song:
“You can’t talk about conscious Hip Hop in America without Talib Kweli’s name coming up in the conversation. His lyrical wizardry combined with his insight and knowledge on social issues, have earned him global respect, from both industry insiders and the public. He is also a solid and focused human being, making him a great pleasure to work with.” – Frank Fitzpatrick
