Alpha Diallo Rising Up To Meet Today’s Challenges

“Immé” is Fulani and it means ‘rise up.’ We’re facing different things in this world today, from climate change to political issues to immigration, political instability … so I’m saying, “Immé.”

-Alpha Diallo

The Artist:

World-class multi-instrumentalist Alpha Diallo brings a sense of joy, pride, and beauty into every piece of music he creates. Born in the West African country of Guinea, he brings the Old World music and tradition of his people into harmony with elements of Caribbean, European, and American music. He is renowned for his inimitable styling as a guitarist, vocalist, and percussionist.

Diallo truly paved his own way to success. He taught himself how to play the guitar at an early age, having to painstakingly learn to transpose the melodies and rhythms he heard from the indigenous instruments of West Africa into music he could play with a six-string. Diallo established himself as a musician with a series of bands before becoming a member of Fatala, a group of West African musicians signed to Peter Gabriel’s record label, Real World.

Since 1991, Alpha Diallo has released five critically acclaimed albums under his own name and toured all over the world. He has performed with acts such as Jimmy Cliff, Third World, and Burning Spear. His musicianship and inspirational story have earned him countless awards. A documentary about Diallo’s life and music, entitled The Best of Both Worlds, was released in 2001, showing an up-close glimpse at Diallo’s life, both on the road and at home in Vancouver, Canada. His latest album, Immé, released in 2010, provides the message of hope that people can rise to any challenge that the modern world may present. Through mutual respect, service to our own communities, and hard work based on the common ground shared by all people, we can attain a more harmonious future.

Alpha is featured, along with Cuban virtuoso Arturo Sandoval, in the soundtrack (composed by Frank Fitzpatrick) for the upcoming film “High Chicago” (Alphons & Robert Adetuyi).

The Song:

Immé – Alpha Diallo

“The greatest instrument ever created is the human voice. Collaborating with Alpha recently on my soundtrack for High Chicago was a true pleasure. His amazing voice, West African soul and beautiful spirit helped us to really connect the two continents and create a resonating subtext for audiences in both North America and Africa.“

– Frank Fitzpatrick
